Queen Pia: Assuming Command Responsibility

I’ve come to realize one more reason for me to admire Miss Universe 2015 Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach.  She has demonstrated a sense of leadership by assuming command responsibility of the controversy surrounding her coronation.

Pia immediately assumed being part of the Miss Universe organization, that is why when asked why she kept on apologizing for what happened, she said that she is now part of the MUOrg and that she is now the voice of Miss Universe.  [Source: What You Didn’t See during the Miss Universe Presscon]

Technically Pia didn’t have to apologize at all because the issue was literally not her fault.  She could have just deferred the matter to the person responsible for the controversy; Steve Harvey owned up to it, too, so there wouldn’t be any problem if she wanted to pass it to him.  But she apologized anyway since she now considered herself part of the Miss Universe organization upon inheriting the crown – and all its responsibilities and liabilities as well.  Owning up to your mistake is courageous; owning up to the mistake of someone else because of a sense of duty is heroic.  The fact that she assumed the liability of the mistake barely a few minutes after joining the organization just further cemented her right to the honor bestowed upon her because she showed she now also owned the situation of the organization.

There is nobility in leadership, not just because of the honor it carries, but when said honor is actually seen by assuming accountability in resolving issues.  It’s not just a matter of getting what you deserve; it’s taking ownership of everything that comes with it, including any problems, and doing something to try and fix it.  The mark of a leader is getting things done, even if it means fixing someone else’s issues, because at the end of the day, a leader doesn’t lose sight of the end goal; a leader does what he can and should do.

And to all the fans who are still fighting about this… Please let’s all stop now. The Miss Universe Organization is about uniting empowered women from all over the world. Arguing and sending hateful messages to each other defeats the whole purpose. You believe in the message of Miss Universe and so do I. Again, thank you for the love. [Source: Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach on Instagram]

Assuming command responsibility isn’t as common a trait as it used to be in leaders these days.  Honestly, this same criticism applies to me at times (or often?), too.  I hope Pia’s example inspires all of us, whether we’re in positions of leadership or not, to do our part to do what’s right to fix what’s wrong, simply because it’s the right thing to do, and ultimately because we’re all in this together and we ought to help one another in whatever way we can.

It’s only fair that you should get what you deserve – and it’s also only fair for that to include all the good and bad that come with it.
