Post-Elections 2016: Plan B

May 28, 2016 Leave a comment

Elections 2016 have come and gone.

During the campaign period, there was talk of the Liberal Party preparing a plan to oust Rodrigo Duterte via impeachment in case Mar Roxas lost the Presidency.  This was on the assumption that the party would still control Congress, and that Representative Leni Robredo would win as Vice-President instead of Senator Bong Bong Marcos.  This rumor has since been dispelled, but with Robredo officially declared the winner, I couldn’t help but remember and reflect on this matter some more.  People called this the Liberal Party’s “Plan B.”

Time for Plan B

“Plan B.”

It’s amazing that five letters, put together in a certain sequence and in a particular point in time, can mean something.  It’s not even a complete sentence, yet it can convey the fiercest, most arrogant, and most defiant of statements in the simplest and laconic of forms – but only if something is attributed to it.

Five letters, put together in a certain sequence and in a particular point in time, have the potential to evoke strong emotions of excitement, ambition, hope, exasperation, disgust, indignation, and anything and everything across the wide spectrum of human emotions – but that will only happen if any meaning is given to it.

Five letters, put together in a certain sequence and in a particular point in time, can be viewed from a neutral standpoint.  “Why the hell are we even wasting time talking about nothing?” you might declare, and you’re right.

But five letters, put together in a certain sequence and in a particular point in time, can divide people – at least those who see something in them – into two groups.  To be “for” or “against” is ultimately irrelevant, because acting upon the ascribed meaning of these letters, regardless of the grouping, will cause conflict.  And unfortunately the only loser in any conflict that happens because of these letters is all of us.

I think whoever said that words are powerful could never have imagined that letters, endowed with a certain color, and removed of its innocence, can make or break us all – if we’re not vigilant to prevent such from doing so.

The only way to go is forward – and for the sake of our nation, that’s exactly what we all need to do.
